Ginseng: The Ancient Root Powering Modern Skincare

Once called “The Root of Immortality” in ancient Eastern medicine texts as far back as 196 AD (notably in The Shen-Nung Pharmacopoeia), Ginseng is making a vibrant comeback — especially in the world of skincare. This incredible root has been treasured for centuries, and I’m excited to share why it deserves a place in your wellness and beauty routine.

Disclaimer: Ginseng is not FDA-approved for medicinal use in the U.S., but it is widely available as an herbal supplement. This blog post is based on traditional Eastern medicine teachings and practices.

What Exactly Is Ginseng?

Ginseng is a root, harvested much like a carrot, and comes in two primary types: Korean (Panax Ginseng) and American (Panax Quinquefolius). Long used in traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cultures, it has been valued for its ability to increase stamina, improve immunity, support overall well-being, and even bring good fortune during challenging times.

Ginseng is naturally rich in:

  1. B Vitamins: B1, B2, B5, and B12
  2. Amino acids, peptides, and folic acid
  3. Essential fatty acids and minerals
  4. Ginsenosides: Compounds structurally similar to human hormones, believed to support hormonal balance, regulate blood pressure, boost metabolism, and even aid appetite control.

Traditional Uses of Ginseng

Here are some of the many uses Ginseng has been studied or traditionally used for:

  1. Supporting healthy immune function
  2. Enhancing energy and stamina (as a natural stimulant)
  3. Supporting blood sugar balance
  4. Improving mood and mental clarity
  5. Enhancing sexual performance and libido
  6. Aiding digestion and liver function
  7. Reducing inflammation and tumor growth
  8. Supporting a balanced stress response
  9. Assisting with weight management
  10. Improving circulation, especially in cases of erectile dysfunction
  11. Fighting cancer by supporting healthy T-cell function
Note: While powerful, Ginseng isn't right for everyone. Avoid use if you are:
  1. Pregnant or breastfeeding
  2. Experiencing anxiety or insomnia (it may overstimulate)
  3. Taking anticoagulant medications
  4. A diabetic (use with extreme caution – more info here)
